Cash had been sitting at the bar long enough for the burn of the whiskey to settle into something warm. The bartender kept glancing his way — not suspicious, not annoyed, just curious. Cash could feel it. People always looked at him like that. Like they were trying to figure out what kind of man drinks like he’s got nowhere to be and everywhere to go.
The bartender finally leaned in. “You drink like you’ve done this before.”
Cash smirked. “I’ve had practice.”
“Where you coming from?” the bartender asked, wiping down the counter.
Cash tapped the rim of his glass. “Mars.”
That got the bartender’s attention. A couple of nearby patrons even turned their heads. Mars wasn’t exotic, but it wasn’t casual either. People who came from Mars usually had stories — the kind you didn’t ask about unless you were ready to hear them.
“You work the mines?” the bartender asked.
Cash nodded. “For a while.”
“What’d you do there?”
Cash took a slow breath, letting the memory settle. “I played.”
The bartender blinked. “Played?”
“Guitar,” Cash said. “Sang. Kept the miners sane. Break rooms, tunnels, cargo‑bay bars. Anywhere someone needed a song to forget where they were.”
The bartender leaned on the counter, interested now. “So you were a performer.”
Cash shrugged. “I didn’t call it that. They did.”
“What’d they call you?”
Cash looked up, eyes catching the neon glow behind the bar. “Cool Cat.”
The bartender chuckled. “Cool Cat, huh?”
“That’s what they said.” Cash’s voice softened. “Said I made the nights feel shorter. Said I kept morale up. Said I made Mars feel less like Mars.”
The bartender studied him for a moment. “You any good?”
Cash didn’t answer with words. He reached down, lifted his guitar case, and set it on the bar with a quiet thud.
The bartender raised an eyebrow. “You want to play?”
Cash looked around the room — the crowd, the lights, the hum of the station. “Depends,” he said. “You got a stage?”
The bartender pointed to a small platform near the corner, barely big enough for one man and one guitar.
Cash smiled. “That’ll do.”
He stood, hat brim casting a shadow across his eyes, and walked toward the stage — the first one he’d touched since leaving Mars.
He didn’t know it yet, but this was the moment everything started again.
